Congolese protest

Description

A large group of Congolese protested outside 10 Downing Street yesterday.

Presidential elections are running in D.R. Congo this year. Yesterday's protesters support Jean-Pierre Bemba for the presidency. Joseph Kabila is the current president. Though Kabila made moves to stop the '96 - '02 war, some Congolese feel he has an international agenda behind him, whereas Bemba and his '100% Congolese' campaign have Congo's best interests at heart.

There were 33 runners in the elections on July 30, 2006. Kabila is popular with the east of the country. Bemba speaks fluent Lingala, which is the dominant language in the capital and the west of the country, where he is considered their regional son.

Bemba's voters were hoping there would be no majority winner from this election, so a head-to head with the top two runners would take place. Kabila received 44% of the votes; Bemba received 20%. The head to head will be October 29, 2006.
